| Not only is this new generation of iPod Shuffle at risk of functionality loss if/when the earphones die (which, let's face it, happens a lot more often than the failure of the unit itself), but the latest generation of Shuffle has *still* not resolved the problem that every other generation of Shuffle has had: the lack of a rewind facility. Yes, it's possible to go back to the beginning of a track. But when you're listening to an .aa file that's 8 hours long, and midway through you miss 30 seconds of key action because of an interruption, trust me, you really don't want to have to go all the way back to the start. I had expected Apple to resolve this in the second generation, since they make such a big deal of supporting Audible audiobook files. They didn't. And now the third generation - however slick it looks - still ignores this issue. Also not keen on the voiceover feature. The old Q-BEs were great for small size without feature reduction, because they supported a tiny but legible screen to let you know what you were listening to without verbal interruption. Surely the industry giants at Apple should be able to do something similar? Only if they did, they'd probably have to sacrifice some of their ridiculous DRM protection. Forget it. I want a tiny mp3 player that allows me good control of audiobook listening, shows me what's playing, and - ideally - doesn't force me to go through the whole time-wasting exercise of booting & synching iTunes every time I want to change the book. I'd just about put up with iTunes if Apple could provide the other functionality, but they've made it clear that these are not their priorities, so for me, they've had their last chance, and I'll be looking for another supplier. Bottom line is - It is not Special. | |
