Since the proliferation of digital audio players began in the early 2000's there has been a lot of changes in what the term mp3 player actually means. A lot of these devices now come with the ability to play video and some publications refer to them as portable media players. This term has not caught on and the term mp3 player continues to be used to refer to both devices.
When shopping for one of these devices one has to consider what the predominat use of the mp3 / mp4 player is going to be.
Solid state memory now comes in large capacities but due to cost the bigger capacity mp3 players still use microdrive disk and these are more suitable for video. For music alone SSD mp3 players will suffice for most users. SSD has also been proven to be more durable thus if one's expecting to get usage whilst pursuing active sports the only one to go for is the SSD which is olso more compact and lighter.
